Data
Name: Roon E. Schriebstien, formerly James.
Age: About 19 - 20. As he was a foundling and raised in an Orphanage his birthday was defaulted to January 1st for ease of documentation, and so he's not exactly certain of his real age.
Equipment: Roon has many things in his many pockets. In the first he carries drawing utensils, charcoal, chalk, various brushes and several erasers. In the second he carries his notebook, which lists the notes on the many and varied things he has discovered about magic and it's behaviors. In the third he carries a sheaf of about twenty slips of paper, each with elaborate symbols drawn on one side. In the satchel he carries two knives, commonly divided into four parts. When assembled, these knives have a steel frame made of blessed metal - as they are made from the nails that once held up a church - and glass handles and blades. Inscribed on them are several Runes, and the patterns that cover his coat are also seen here.
In the pocket strapped to his leg are things of unknown identity; the clasp is locked and sealed at all times, and Roon will often glance at it, even during conversation, as if to convince himself of something.
Appearance: Roon is a very scruffy and ill-dressed individual. He wears a green, tailed coat with elaborate, luminescent symbols on it's lining, a green shirt, a pair of black jeans and some shoes which look like they've been the subject of many repairs. Indeed, his entire ensemble looks to be repaired by him at some point, and over it he has a belt with three pockets around his waist, another belt with a single pocket on his left leg and usually carries a satchel over his shoulder.
Race: Human
Status as an Enchanter
Roon is currently The Enchanter. Number one hundred and twenty four.
Roon is not happy with this state of affairs, and is actively paranoid and emotionally disturbed because of it. Understandably, he resents this state of affairs, but he has come to realize that he has a job to do, and it's the only thing he can. He will try to uphold the ideals this job imposes on him to the best of his ability, but is often hindered by his many issues and fears.
If someone is causing him trouble, Roon will often try to deal with them via proxy; removing the spell or instance forcefully from the background while trying to conceal his own existence. Roon will never confront someone if another option is available; he's become scared both for himself and for others.
Mentality and History
After spending a long rehabilitation period with Archanon and Archa Hiru, Roon haschanged considerably. There are several factors that contribute to his current state, and they are as follows.
Roon grew up in an orphanage. Not necessarily an unkind one or a miserable one, but not one he liked. The reason for this was that Roon never got on with people, and swung from confrontational to sulky constantly enough to alienate himself from the other children. He had one friend, one REAL friend, called Lauren. Lauren was not, perhaps, the best friend, but she and Roon genuinely cared for each other. Lauren was outgoing, troublesome and often selfish, and Roon was often the one to put himself forward for punishment to make sure she stayed out of trouble with the carers at the orphanage.
Magic was a taboo subject in the Orphanage, and at one point Lauren and Roon became suspicious as to a couple of 'adoptions' of children they never saw evidence of. One boy, Mikael, showed the others how he could conjure sparks in the air one day, and was 'adopted' the next. Any children displaying magical ability disappeared.
This was the reason Lauren was the first - and only - person Roon showed his project to. Always having a fascination with magic, Roon has experemented various kinds of it until, quite by accident, he discovered that he could draw Runes. He drew every single one he made and invented onto a single knife. It seemed inconsequential at the time; knives were cool.
But them came the second big event in Roon's life.
Lauren was killed.
During one late-night meeting between the two, the Knife somehow acquired a life of it's own, snatching and tearing out pieces of Roon's own mind to make up for it's own, and in it's escape it drove itself clean through Lauren's head. It was by the sudden pain and crippling fear alone Roon managed to escape the orphanage.
For a while, Roon was petrified of even using the power he had access to, but fear soon drove him to reclaim the Knife. He hardly remembers the events during this time, as his mind was not completely functional, but in the end the Knife was re-integrated haphazardly into his own mind, making him a functional but broken individual.
From then on Roon was obsessed with two things with he alternated between; Ridding himself of his 'curse' and bringing Lauren back to life.
On both fronts he failed miserably, but during this obsession his knowledge of magic expanded considerably, and his power grew. He was openly hostile to the world, and perhaps there was a reason beyond the normal confines of the psyche.
Roon's presence in the place he called home coupled with the sheer emotion he put into the magic he was researching soon gave birth to the Genius Loci; which soon consumed the surrounding area and then Roon himself, driving him into horrifying acts of homicide and violence. During this time The Knife reassembled itself inside Roon's head, acting like an antivirus and hindering the Street's progress, eventually expunging it altogether.
However, Roon was not spared the horror of his actions, the fear of losing control on such a scale or the social repercussions. He took refuge in the only place he trusted; the house of Archanon and Archa Hiru. He still lives in almost complete solitude, but has started to rebuild his life. He has continued his study from when he left school at 14, discovering an interesting talent for mathematics, and is finally starting to act on the fears he has cultivated.
During this entire shambles of a life, Roon has died more times than he can count. Some would say that 'dying' and them coming back removes the trauma of the death.
Not so.
During his time alive, Roon feels the pain and soul-burning discomfort inherant to the Enchanter, but has things to distract him from it. Sight, hearing, taste, touch, smell. When 'dead' he is simply a soul bound to the Aether, unable to even think as he is exposed to the greatest pain it is possible to know. He resurrects himself through sheer force of will, fear and pain.
Were it not for this, Roon would have killed himself long, long ago.
Rune Tags and Sigils
Roon has devised many safeguards to shield himself from external forces. Having evaluated his life and realized that every evil event inside it can be traced to a being or a spell using the connection between the rune as his mind, Roon has looked into Sigils.
Sigils are shapes which can manipulate magic with no outside help, like a magic circuit board, and Roon has contained himself to only using runes which have first been drawn on a small slip of paper. A Sigil is then drawn around them, creating a magical 'firewall' between the Rune and himself. When placed on a surface and activated, the rune is transferred onto that surface along with the Sigil, allowing Roon to use the runes in a safe, albeit less versatile, way.
The same process has been applied to his two fighting knives, each rune thereon adequately protected and guarded.
Normally, a Sigil would be crushed by a rune's presence, as would any other spell, but Roon has arranged them in such a way that the rune actually powers the Sigil, and while destroying them is much easier than simply using a rune would be, destroying them through magical means is still all but impossible.
Roon's coat also has, inside it, a large Sigil array. It allows it and the wearer to reduce their gravity substantially, and this allows Roon to jump great distances and survive very high falls. However, Roon is also easily blown back, and is in no position to block anything lest be be sent flying.
Roon will never draw a rune in combat or without first arranging a Sigil array to contain it. He will not risk anything happening because of his own negligence.
